After Rome and Milan, Vincent van Gogh ’s masterpieces from the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo , Netherlands, are stopping in Italy for the third time in the space of a year and a half: Trieste is the city that will welcome them, at the Museo Revoltella from February 22 to June 30, 2024, for an exhibition that, according to what the organizers(Arthemisia and the City of Trieste) announced, will be a kind of “encore” of the Rome exhibition(read our review of the Palazzo Bonaparte exhibition here), which marked the return of Van Gogh’s works to Italy after a few years’ absence, followed by the Milan exhibition dedicated to Van Gogh’s culture but built from a similar selection(read our review of the Mudec exhibition here).

Compared to the exhibition in Rome, the one in Giulia will have one more special presence, namely the two portraits of Monsieur and Madame Ginoux, the owners of the café in Arles frequented by Van Gogh, made the first in 1888 and the second in 1890 (the one of Madame Ginoux is one of the versions that theartist painted during his stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence) and preserved respectively, one at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo (lender, as mentioned, of almost all the works in the exhibition) and the other at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome. At the Trieste exhibition, the two spouses, friends of Van Gogh, will be side by side.

Vincent van Gogh (Zundert, March 30, 1853 - Auvers-sur-Oise, July 29, 1890) had a difficult life, spent on the edge of madness, restless and wandering, until the tragic ending that led to his suicide at just 37 years of age. Like many great artists, his work was not understood in his lifetime, but today he is the world’s best-known artist, an icon in art history, beloved by the general public.

The Trieste exhibition is curated by Maria Teresa Benedetti and Francesca Villanti, the same curators of the Rome show that drew a record 600,000 visitors, and is organized in collaboration with the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. More than 50 works by Van Gogh will be on display, enhanced by extensive educational apparatus, videos, immersive and scenic rooms and more.
