Cultural heritage is absent from M5S's twenty points for forming the new government

There is not a single word for cultural heritage in the “programmatic points of the Parliamentary Groups of the MoVimento 5 Stelle for the formation of the New Government,” the document that the Pentastellati parliamentarians, through the Movement’s political chief, Luigi Di Maio, submitted today to the Prime Minister in charge Giuseppe Conte (the text is available on the Ansa website).

Beyond a more than generic and completely vague passage in point 14 (“expansionary policies with a share of investment in infrastructure, the environment and culture to be deducted from the Maastricht parameters”), the programmatic points did not take culture into account at all, despite the fact that just yesterday the prime minister in charge said that the new government will work, among other things, to enhance the value of cultural heritage. Instead, there is room for cutting MPs (the first point, probably the one that Pentastellist MPs consider the most important), for a maneuver that will prevent VAT increases and can cut the tax wedge, for a paradigm shift on the environment (a “green new deal” that will make Italy 100 percent renewable).

Also: Conflict of interest law, justice reform, completion of the differentiated autonomy process requested by Veneto, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, interventions for legality (“jail the big tax evaders, fight against mafias and illegal trafficking”), investment plan for the south, reform of the banking system (“separate investment banks from commercial banks”), protection of common goods (school, water, health, infrastructure), gender policies, protection of minors (revision of the foster care system, fight against school dropout and bullying), an end to arms sales to belligerent countries, policies for young people, reform of university recruitment and access systems, policies for the protection of citizens, consumers, workers and service users, reorganization of territorial health and social-health services, protection of animals and support for agricultural supply chains.

Di Maio let it be known that the 5-Star Movement will start the government only if the 20 programmatic points enter the government program: “otherwise better the vote,” said the Pentastellated political leader. The points will be discussed in upcoming meetings.
