Candidate for Italian Capital of Culture 2021, Volterra proposes a pact among candidate cities together with Parma: the mayor of Volterra, Giacomo Santi, has written to MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini, the mayor of Parma and the president of ANCI in order to consider the possibility of moving Parma 2020 to next year.
In recent days, MiBACT has extended to June 30, 2020 the deadline for submission of candidacy dossiers for Italian Capital of Culture 2021. In this regard, the mayor of Volterra proposes that the extension should also apply to candidate cities that have already submitted their dossiers.
In addition, the city is sympathetic and close to Parma, which due to the health emergency cannot carry out its program of events and activities as Italian Capital of Culture 2020. In a letter addressed to Minister Franceschini, Parma Mayor Federico Pizzarotti and National Association of Italian Municipalities President Antonio Decaro, Volterra’s mayor asked MiBACT to intervene to understand whether the conditions exist for a Parma 2021, thereby fostering the city’s revitalization through Capital of Culture resources, events and happenings.
He also asked for precise news on a possible shift of Parma Capital to 2021, which would automatically mean a shift to 2022 of the title to be awarded to candidate cities.
“Out of respect for those who have done a great job,” said Volterra Mayor Giacomo Santi, “it is necessary to have reassurances in a clear and precise way about the timing and modalities of the one-year shift, and in particular that all the cities that had expressed a willingness to apply for 2022 not re-enter the competition for the year in question, but slip in their turn to 2023. This, too, is a concrete way to give each other a hug, to start over together, to be at the center of the future rebirth of our country and the whole world, through care, culture, art and beauty. Everyone will do their part together.”
