MiBAC invests 109 million euros for the safety of visitors, employees and cultural sites

The Ministry of Cultural Heritage is investing 109 million euros in a plan for the safety of visitors, employees and cultural sites.

During a visit to the headquarters of theState Archives in Arezzo, where two Ministry of Cultural Heritage employees lost their lives in September in a work-related accident, Minister Alberto Bonisoli announced that MiBAC has allocated 109 million euros to invest in the safety of visitors, employees and cultural sites, “with an unprecedented effort,” the minister stressed, “that will affect 314 sites. There has never been a greater investment in security in the history of this ministry.”

The minister added that an extraordinary plan for occupational safety and the protection of the physical integrity of employees, visitors to cultural sites and the national heritage itself is the best way to honor the memory of Piero Bruni and Filippo Bagni, the two workers who passed away. The plan will focus on fire safety and training. “Safety, a public good par excellence,” the minister concluded, “is a priority of this government also in the area of cultural heritage and therefore the protection of heritage, including churches and monuments of Italy. We will continue our efforts in this direction: we intend to improve our capacity for monitoring and control and reaction in cases of emergency, without neglecting useful opportunities attributable to European negotiations currently underway in cutting-edge sectors. I also had the opportunity to talk about this yesterday in Florence with European Commissioner for Culture Navracsics.”

Bonisoli reiterated the concept at a plenary meeting of state library directors held at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence. The main topic was security, with all directors being invited by the minister, MiBAC Secretary General Giovanni Panebianco and Director General of Libraries and Cultural Institutes Paola Passarelli to analyze in depth critical issues and possible solutions. “On the subject of security,” the minister pointed out, “I will have very little tolerance and the institutes will have to adapt as soon as possible.” The meeting then discussed digitization, networks among libraries, joint interventions, and promotion of library heritage.
