Major exhibition on Canova coming to Lucca this winter, curated by Sgarbi

A major exhibition dedicated to Antonio Canova and neoclassicism in the Tuscan city will arrive in Lucca this winter, from December 8. It will be curated by Vittorio Sgarbi and will be held at the Cavallerizza, where the current undersecretary had curated an excellent exhibition dedicated to the art of the territory, the one on Lucca's Caravaggesque painters.

In December Lucca will host a major exhibition on Antonio Canova and Neoclassicism in the Tuscan city, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi and produced by Contemplazioni. It will be held at the Cavallerizza in Lucca, where Sgarbi had previously curated his project Il Museo della Follia (The Museum of Madness ) and, above all, the excellent monographic exhibition on Pietro Paolini and the Caravaggesque painters of Lucca(here is our review), moreover the first exhibition dedicated to Paolini.

So now it is Canova’s turn, a choice one imagines favored by the fact that Sgarbi, as of 2019, is president of the non-profit Fondazione Canova, the entity that manages the Gypsotheca and Museo Antonio Canova in Possagno. The neoclassical sculptures will be visible in Lucca for nearly a year: from Dec. 8, 2023 to Sept. 29, 2024.

The junta of Lucca, led by mayor Mario Pardini, has in fact approved the outline of an agreement with the Contemplazioni company for the organization of this project designed, Contemplazioni points out, both for the Lucca community and for an international audience. An itinerary, the producing company announces, between painting and sculpture, which will start from Antonio Canova, universal icon of the new classicism, and from the most famous international exponents such as Francisco Goya and Francesco Hayez, up to the Lucchese and Tuscan masters of the same current, including Pompeo Batoni, Bernardino Nocchi, Stefano Tofanelli and Lorenzo Bartolini, to name but a few. The exhibition will combine the mastery of Antonio Canova, among the world’s most celebrated artists, with the recovery, promotion and enhancement of part of the artistic heritage of Lucca and Tuscany.

The stipulation of the partnership agreement between the City of Lucca and the Contemplazioni company follows the publication of a special notice last March and regulates all those activities of co-design, management and implementation of various initiatives, from promotion and enhancement, which will be partly by the City and partly by the private company. The details of the exhibition are still confidential: in fact, the cultural contents of the exhibition will be presented in detail later.
