The names of the ten finalist cities for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2022 have been revealed. Revealing the names in advance is the AgCult agency: the cities are Ancona, Bari, Cerveteri, L’Aquila, Pieve di Soligo, Procida, Taranto, Trapani, Verbania and Volterra. The ten finalists prevailed from a batch of 28 participants. MiBACT was supposed to announce the shortlist of ten finalist projects by October 12 and conclude the evaluation by November 12: in short, the name of the winning city should have been known by now, but the procedure has slipped.
The finalists’ dossiers will therefore be evaluated by the jury (composed of Stefano Baia Curioni, Salvatore Adduce, Francesca Cappelletti, Roberto Livraghi, Cristina Loglio, Franco Iseppi and Giuseppe Piperata), and we should soon know the name of the Italian Capital of Culture 2022, which will succeed to Parma, holder of the title in 2021 as well (the Emilian city had in fact been designated as capital for 2020 but, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided to make it capital for 2021 as well). The 2022 capital will precede Bergamo and Brescia, which have already been named capitals of culture for 2023, as a tribute for being the most affected territory during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Before that, the capitals had been Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna, and Siena (2015), Mantua (2016), Pistoia (2017), and Palermo (2018). In 2019, the title was not awarded because Italy had Matera as the European Capital of Culture.
It is also worth mentioning that in recent weeks, the mayor of one of the candidate cities, Cerveteri, had proposed an agreement under which the ten finalists, together with the neighboring city, would promote each other.
