The third and final phase of the restoration of the Polyptych of the Mystical Lamb, a masterpiece by Jan and Hubert Van Eyck dated 1432, has begun: the work was awarded through a European tender to the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK/IRPA), which had already been commissioned for previous restorations(here is our four-partfocus on the polyptych’s restoration).
The work will be hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK), where visitors will once again be able to admire the experts at work behind a glass case.
This third and final phase of the restoration will involve the upper register of the interior panels of the polyptych. These consist of 7 heterogeneous and articulated panels depicting Christ Enthroned, the Madonna and St. John the Baptist in the center; the musician angels and Adam and Eve in the side panels. The paintings will be restored to their original splendor after having undergone retouching and overpainting over the years.
The work is scheduled for completion in spring 2026.
