Capodimonte masterpieces will remain in Turin until September

Neapolitans will have to do without the Capodimonte masterpieces for several more months. Until September 22, in fact, they will be on display at the Reggia di Venaria, just outside Turin. They have been missing from the museum since spring 2023, when they left for an exhibition at the Louvre.

The masterpieces of the Capodimonte National Museum will be away from Naples for quite a while yet: for most of 2024. Some 70 works from the collection, including such prime pieces as Masaccio’s Crucifixion , Parmigianino’sAntea , as well as Caravaggio’s Flagellation , which, although not owned by the museum, has long exhibited at Capodimonte, last spring left the Neapolitan institution for the Louvre in Paris, where, as a result of a much-discussed loan, they remained on display, from June 7, 2023 until January 8, 2024, for the exhibition Naples à Paris. Le Louvre invite le musée de Capodimonte. Now, the distance of the Neapolitan works, as, however, had already been announced, is extended by another nine months.

The works, before returning to Naples, will in fact stop at the Reggia di Venaria, near Turin, where they will form, from March 28 to September 22, 2024, the exhibition Capodimonte da Reggia a Museo. Five Centuries of Masterpieces from Masaccio to Andy Warhol. In a note from the Piedmontese institution, the exhibition is described as an “unmissable exhibition itinerary to discover not only an extraordinary collection, but also a fascinating history: that of a Royal Palace that became a great Museum that, over the centuries, has preserved some of the finest art collections in all of Europe.”

This exhibition, curated by the former director of Capodimonte, Sylvain Bellenger, and Andrea Merlotti, is made possible as a result of an intervention by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Capodimonte Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte, the Consortium of the Royal Residences of Savoy and the Royal Museums of Turin. In short, Neapolitans will have to wait several more months to see their works....
