Director Marco Bellocchio was the big star of the 2020 edition of the David di Donatello Awards, the sixty-fifth of the important film event that rewards the best of Italian cinema every year. This edition took place last night, with no audience, no nominees and awardees, and no guests: it was broadcast live on Rai 1 with only the presence of host Carlo Conti, with the nominees connected by videoconference.
Bellocchio’s film, Il traditore (which tells the story of mafia turncoat Tommaso Buscetta), won six statuettes: it was followed, with five awards, by Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio, then Matteo Rovere’s Il primo re with three and Ferzan Özpetek’s La dea fortuna, with two. The best film award went to Il traditore, and again Bellocchio won the best director statuette. Third prize for Il traditore, that of best leading actor, which goes to Pierfrancesco Favino (he plays the role of Buscetta in the film). Best actress Jasmine Trinca in La dea fortuna. Il traditore also wins the awards for best original screenplay (which goes to Marco Bellocchio, Ludovica Rampoldi, Valia Santella and Francesco Piccolo), best supporting actor (to Luigi Lo Cascio) and best editor (Francesca Calvelli).
The award for best foreign film, on the other hand, goes to Parasite by Korean director Bong Joon-ho, triumphant at the 2020 Oscars (it was the first non-English-language film in history to win best film). Best documentary is Selfie by Agostino Ferrente, while best short film goes to Inverno by Giulio Mastromauro.
Best first-time director is 24-year-old Italian of Bengali descent Phaim Bhuiyan, who wins with his debut feature Bangla, which tells the story of a Bengali boy born in Italy. Best adapted screenplay is by Maurizio Braucci and Pietro Marcello for Martin Eden, while the best producer award goes to Greenland, Gapbusters, Rai Cinema and Roman Citizen for Il primo re: the same film wins best cinematographer (Daniele Cipri) and best sound. Valeria Golino, with her performance in 5 is the perfect number, wins the best supporting actress statuette.
For Garrone’s Pinocchio five technical awards: best set designer (Dimitri Capuani), best costume designer (Massimo Cantini Parrini) and best makeup artist (Dalia Colli, Mark Coulier), best hairstylist (Francesco Pegoretti) and best special effects (Rodolfo Migliari and Theo Demetris). The best musician award goes to the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio for The Magic Flute of Piazza Vittorio, while best original song is Che vita meravigliosa by Diodato, for La dea fortuna.
Finally, the David Giovani goes to Mio fratello rincorre i dinosauri by Stefano Cipani, the viewer’s David is for Il primo Natale by Ficarra and Picone, and the only special David of this edition goes to Franca Valeri.
