As we predicted a few days ago (obviously getting it right), Banksy could not avoid having his say on the topic of the moment, the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. He did so with a photograph posted a couple of hours ago on his Instagram account, as has been his practice for some time now: the social of images has become his favorite medium for communicating his new creations to the world.
So, the pandemic has been declined from the point of view of forced domestic containment, which evidently causes Banksy some relationship problems, since the comment accompanying the photo is “my wife hates it when I work from home” (“my wife hates it when I work at home”). The photograph depicts a bathroom turned upside down by the celebrated stencil-drawn mice that are the Bristol-based street artist ’s most recognizable brand of frabbric. There’s no shortage of references to toilet paper, an item that goes wild outside Italy during lockdown, especially in Anglo-Saxon countries: many Brits will probably despair at seeing it wasted in this way. Then again, rats spraying soap in reference to hygiene requirements, another counting days (in the same manner as prisoners tracing marks on cell walls), yet another soiling the toilet, and so on.
The photo obviously liked: more than a million likes and 12 thousand comments (mostly monosyllabic, as per habit). All regular for the star artist of the web (and of sales at Sotheby’s). And yet becoming more and more predictable and expected.
Banksy's new work is dedicated (of course) to the coronavirus |
