Uffizi warns Pornhub: no permission for Classic Nudes project

It was a few days ago that Pornhub, a major international porn site, launched the Classic Nudes project, which offers six guides to museums around the world to discover the nude works by the most famous artists they house. A map of each museum institution (six in all) tells the public where the masterpieces are located, and an audio guide in English narrates the painting. There are also a number of video guides on the site that recreate the most iconic museum works: these include Botticelli’s Venus and Spring, Urbino’s Venus, Caravaggio’s Bacchus, Courbet’sOrigine du monde, and many others.

Pornhub has chosen to narrate in this way the greatest masterpieces of art history preserved in the Uffizi in Florence, the Prado in Madrid, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan in New York and the National Gallery in London.

The launch of the project is not sitting well with the director of the Uffizi Galleries Eike Schmidt, who is ready to distrust the well-known porn site. In fact, the latter has not requested any authorization for the use of images of the museum, so the Uffizi has not granted any permission and no agreement has been made; moreover, the use of images of works is bound to the payment of a fee that Pornhub has not paid.

The Uffizi was thus the first museum, among those involved unbeknownst to them by the porn site, to warn Pornhub for using the museum’s name and images without permission. Other international museums could also follow the Uffizi’s example and distrust or sue Pornhub.
