Mantua, a new line of socks inspired by the Hall of the Zodiac on sale at Palazzo d'Arco

After the first successful experience, L'Arte inCalza returns to Palazzo d'Arco in Mantua: the new line of socks inspired by the Hall of the Zodiac will be presented at the museum. The socks will then be on sale at the museum.

L’Arte inCalza is back at the Museum of Palazzo d’Arco in Mantua, to amaze with new experiments and creations: after the first successful experience, on the occasion of which two hundred and forty pairs of socks were sold in three months and whose proceeds were destined to the realization of themuseum’s Textile Archive, the new line, which will be presented with free admission on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the Zodiac Room of the Mantuan museum, runs on the thread of Alchemy.

And here are the threads of the project: a museum, Palazzo d’Arco, a young designer from the Milan Polytechnic and a craft workshop, About, which together create memory and stories, without expiring into banal reproduction. Not just socks, then, but a weaving of threads, art and culture where craftsmanship and quality serve to go beyond quick consumption and to last.

The new line of socks is inspired by the paintings steeped in symbolism and esotericism in the Zodiac Room of the Palazzo d’Arco and the practices of alchemy, a branch of natural philosophy that has always sought the unobtainable through the manipulation of natural elements read in a symbolic key. The four elements and metal, in its liquid consistency, return in the socks, transforming them into a kind of amulet-jewel that matches well with the mysteriousness and wonders painted in Giovan Maria Falconetto’s Zodiac.

Elia Crippa, the young designer who also designed the new line of socks, says that during his visit to the Palazzo d’Arco Museum he was particularly struck by the Zodiac Room, so rich in stories and especially symbols. “The zodiac and the ’magical’ reading of the stars continue to fascinate us, despite contemporary ’rationality,’” he said. “This collection aims to merge the magic and symbolism of the Palazzo d’Arco paintings with the latest trends in clothing, such as the use of metallic colors and textures for next spring-summer. Designing these socks was a kind of ’alchemical operation’ during which the most prevalent features of the four families of zodiac signs were stylized into shapes and colors, materials and patterns. The result? A sock that serves as an essential accessory to complete an outfit, a precious and sparkling color accent, a ’talisman’ to remind us of our strengths.”

“It is an honor for all of us to be part of this productive sharing project and to have had the opportunity to be artisan creators of beauty,” commented Stefano Alberini, founding partner of About. “One thread answered on top of the other, with hands, by artisan knowledge: this is how About socks are constructed. We can consume without noticing anything or we can be immensely enriched by having a work of art on our feet.”

The socks are for sale only at the Museum, and the proceeds support the La Moda Racconta project for the creation of the textile archive at the Palazzo d’Arco Museum.

Two events are planned, scheduled for May 3 and May 17, both at 6:30 p.m., dedicated to discovering the four elements in the Zodiac of the Palazzo d’Arco. Reservations are required to attend the meetings. Cost: 5 euros.
