A new group work for the Museum Palace: the great peacock by Joan Fontcuberta

A new public and collective artwork enriches the permanent collection of the Palace of Museums in Reggio Emilia: it is Joan Fontcuberta's large peacock composed entirely of photographs.

The Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia, recently completely refurbished, has been enriched with a new collective artwork, which will remain in the permanent collection of the museum venue: it is Curiosa Meravigliosa, created by Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) especially for the Palazzo dei Musei. The artist likes to work with people and collective productions in an unconventional way, and he chose to make a work dedicated to photography as a tribute to the latter’s strong connection with the city, inviting people to be the protagonists of the large installation themselves. He also chose to place it outdoors, to make it visible and accessible every day to everyone.

Curious Wonderful was in fact born thanks to the participation of the citizens of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, who were invited by both the Municipality and Fotografia Europea to send one or more photographs on the themes of curiosity and wonder.

Participation was very high: 12,000 shots arrived and a selection was made from them; the chosen shots were recomposed together with photographs of the objects in the museum collections into asingle large image obtained thanks to digital processing software depicting a large peacock. The artist’s chosen subject draws from the museum’s zoological collections, which he knows very well. The support of Marazzi, a company in the field of ceramic tiles for furniture and design, was crucial in creating the work, which is sixteen meters high in ceramic. The initiative also sees the Art Bonus contribution from Iren spa.

Curiosa Mer avigliosa consists of thirty 120-by-240-centimeter slabs of photo-embossed porcelain stoneware that complement the existing architecture and complete the redevelopment of the small square next to the Museum Palace.

Curious Wonderful is a project of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and the Palazzo Magnani Foundation as part of Fotografia Europea 2021
