Todi, an exhibition traces 50 years of great art in the Umbrian town

From April 16 to Sept. 11, 2022, a show "Artodi" traces fifty years of great art in Todi, with works by artists such as Alighiero Boetti, Beverly Pepper, Piero Dorazio, Gianni Dessì and many others.

Fifty years of contemporary art in Todi, Umbria: from April 16 to September 11, 2022, the Palazzo del Vignola on Via del Seminario in Todi hosts the exhibition Artodi. The great artists who chose Todi, organized by the association “Todi per l’Arte” and curated by Massimo Mattioli. The exhibition, supported by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia, which benefits from the patronage of the Municipality of Todi and from the partnership with Anteo, a social enterprise that manages Palazzo del Vignola, intends to retrace five decades during which big names in contemporary art, from Alighiero Boetti to Beverly Pepper, from Piero Dorazio to Gianni Dessì, from Piero Pizzi Cannella to Marco Tirelli, have chosen Todi as a place to give birth to their works or to exhibit them.

The link between Todi and contemporary art began in the 1970s, a time when Beverly Pepper arrived in the Umbrian town, later settled in Umbria and to whom a sculpture park (the first in the region) is now dedicated, where her works can be admired and which opened to the public in 2019. It was then the turn of Piero Dorazio, to whom, as to Beverly Pepper, an entire room is dedicated precisely because of the close relationship woven with Todi, and then of the artists of the Roman School (such as Nunzio, Gianni Dessì, Marco Tirelli, Piero Pizzi Cannella and then the Umbrian Bruno Ceccobelli, who after his Roman training returned to the land of his birth). There is also an in-depth look at theAssociazione Piazza Maggiore, capable of bringing great artists to Todi (from Hans Arp to Renato Guttuso, from Max Bill to Carlo Carrà), and the Todi Festival, whose image has been curated by artists such as Jannis Kounellis, Arnaldo Pomodoro, and Boetti himself. Space then goes to ceramics, a traditional art of Umbria, with a focus on Todi’s “Via degli Artisti,” which brings together contemporary ceramists.

On display are works by Piero Dorazio, Beverly Pepper, Nino Cordio, Nino Caruso, Brian O’Doherty, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Bruno Ceccobelli, Giuseppe Gallo, Gianni Dessì, Nunzio, Piero Pizzi Cannella, Marco Tirelli, Mauro Salvi, Ugo Levita, Michele Ciribifera, Marino Ficola, Antonella Zazzera, Antonio Buonfiglio, A&C Ceccobelli, Rolf Jacobsen, Michele Toppetti, Riccardo Murelli, Roberto Bernardi, Silvia Ranchicchio, Luca Leandri, Rita Miranda, Giorgio Crisafi. Meetings, events and insights will be organized during the six-month opening to imagine a path toward a contemporary art museum in Todi.
