Great success for the exhibition Pisanello. The tumult of the world that Palazzo Ducale in Mantua is dedicating to Pisanello(you can read Federico Giannini’s review at this link). The exhibition, which will close on January 8, is produced and promoted by the Ducal Palace in Mantua and curated by Stefano L’Occaso, and is designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the exhibition curated by Giovanni Paccagnini, with which one of the most important discoveries in the field of art history in the 20th century was presented: the decorative cycle of chivalric theme in the rooms of the Ducal Palace in Mantua, painted in mixed media by Pisanello, around 1430-1433. In fact, the exhibition is aiming to exceed 62,000 visitors, more than 140% of the Ducal Palace’s admissions in the same months of 2021, a figure that confirms the gradual return to pre-pandemic public influxes. Significant accesses in recent days, aided by the special openings on Dec. 26, Jan. 1 and 2 and free admission on the first Sunday of the month.
Stefano L’Occaso, director of the Ducal Palace and curator of the exhibition, comments as follows, “in reporting these excellent numbers, I take this opportunity to renew the invitation to come to the Ducal Palace during the remaining days of the holidays: on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8, we will also have a rich calendar of guided tours and educational workshops for families (all information and schedules on the website of the Ducal Palace of Mantua). The Pisanello exhibition has been a great satisfaction for us, which repays us for the great work done. Those who have not seen it can still do so until January 8.”
In its 3-month opening Pisanello. The Tumult of the World, has welcomed citizens, tourists, scholars and academics intrigued by the new permanent arrangement of the Hall dedicated to the artist and the adjoining Hall of the Popes, which restores full legibility of the paintings that were torn out and relocated more than fifty years ago, thanks to a new lighting system and a raised platform that allows visitors to appreciate the paintings at the correct distance intended by the artist. At the same time, the anniversary celebration also provided an opportunity to admire reunited in a temporary itinerary some 30 works including international loans, such as Pisanello’s masterpieces the Madonna and Child with Saints Anthony and George from the National Gallery in London, for the first time in Italy since his “departure” in 1862, and drawings from the Louvre Museum in Paris. And also Stefano da Verona’sAdoration of the Magi from the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and, last but not least, the precious Madonna of the Quail, a youthful panel by Pisanello, considered among the iconic works of the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, also available by virtue of an existing enhancement agreement between the two museums on artistic relations between Verona and Mantua.
