Opening Aug. 12, and running through Nov. 18, 2017, is the exhibition Guercino-Preti a confronto. The New Line of Baroque Art, which will compare the works of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino (Cento, 1591 - Bologna, 1666) and those of Mattia Preti (Taverna, 1613 - Valletta, 1699), at the Museo Civico in Taverna (Catanzaro province). This will be the first time of some of Guercino’s masterpieces in Calabria, the native land of Mattia Preti, who will be present with some canvases preserved precisely in Taverna: the exhibition aims to compare two different ways of understanding the Baroque, by two artists who knew each other directly, with Preti also drawing some cues from Guercino’s art.
A number of important works by the Ferrara artist will be brought to Taverna, including the famous Apparition of Christ to His Mother, also recently exhibited at the Piacenza exhibition. After it closes, the exhibition, having left Calabria, will have a continuation in Cento, Guercino’s hometown: works by Mattia Preti (his relationship with Emilian classicism in particular will be investigated) from Taverna will be on display for an exchange that the organizers hope will be fruitful and interesting.
