Goldin returns between 2020 and 2022 with a project that will bring van Gogh, Vedutists and Impressionists to Padua

Announced in Padua the great project Padua. The Wonder of Color: between 2020 and 2022 major exhibitions dedicated to Van Gogh and the colors of the Vedutists and Impressionists.

Marco Goldin’s intentions to discontinue his exhibitions lasted very little. In fact, the mayor of Padua, Sergio Giordani, and the Councillor for Culture, Andrea Colasio, together with Marco Goldin, have announced a new project, of which Goldin is, as usual, the conceiver and creator, entitled Padua. The Wonder of Color. The project, which will be organized with Linea d’ombra, will take place between 2020 and 2022.

Presenting the agreement, Sergio Giordani wanted to reiterate that “Investing in culture, starting with the protection and enhancement of our heritage, means betting on the potential of Padua as a great metropolitan reality, able to play a real function as a magnet, as an attractor of creative energies. It means thinking of Padua as a place of innovation and research, but also of experimentation with artistic languages and social inclusion,” while Andrea Colasio said he was inspired by “André Malraux, the French minister of culture in 1959, who sensed how, in order to bring groups of the population outside the reduced circuits of scientific enjoyment closer to culture, it was necessary to generate unprecedented processes and resort to the ’wonder’ that beauty can generate.” He added, “In defining the schedule of events, we worked with Marco Goldin to anchor the exhibitions to the exceptionality and uniqueness of the path that saw Padua obtain the Italian Unesco candidacy for 2020. With these exhibitions, therefore, a close dialogue is opened between the deep identity of the city and the events it hosts. A path and a project, this of the Urbs picta, centered precisely on the wonder of color aroused, since the 14th century, by the work of Giotto and the great artists who followed in his footsteps in the ancestral city: an exceptionality of the pictorial cycle already emphasized in the chronicles of the time that represented the city as maravejosa.”

The first event of Padua. The Wonder of Color, at the Centro Altinate San Gaetano, will be held from October 10, 2020 to April 11, 2021, where Vincent van Gogh will be the protagonist. It will be an exhibition full of masterpieces. In fact, about one hundred works by the famous artist, including paintings and drawings, will be on display, with absolutely exceptional loans from many European and American museums and especially from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.

Sergio Giordani also said, “An occasion that also rests on a specific anniversary: the 25th anniversary of Linea d’ombra, in 2021, and that our City is very pleased to celebrate with the organization of these exhibitions, which are fully inscribed in that strongly innovative path that has marked Marco Goldin’s history since the beginning. Goldin, in all these years, has demonstrated his great professionalism in combining curating and organizing major exhibitions, whose hallmark is not only that of scientific rigor, but also that of acting as an attractor of a large public, fascinated by the originality and ’magic’ of his events.”

Still at the Centro Altinate San Gaetano, from October 30, 2021 to May 1, 2022, another exhibition will be held: History of the Skies from Canaletto to Monet. The Enchantment of Blue and Other Colors from the Vedutists to the Impressionists, anextensive historical review, thematic in nature, which well represents one of the strands within which the activity of Linea d’ombra has developed, especially in the last decade. But above all, it is an exhibition that, given its subject matter, can only take place in Padua and for the city of Padua is expressly designed.

In fact, two giants, Giotto with the Scrovegni Chapel and Galileo with his studies and with the use of the telescope, provide the background, ideally marking the incipit, to this magnificent journey into the depths of the heavens. Painted, and experienced, with very different sensibilities by many great artists. The exhibition focuses on the last three centuries, beginning with the documentary account of Venetian Vedutism, but with the anticipation, in the prologue, dictated by the greatest sky painter of the 17th century, the Dutchman Jacob van Ruisdael. This is the moment when the sky and nature are finally surrendered to the truth of seeing. Then will be the masterpieces of, among others, Canaletto, Bellotto, and Guardi alongside those of Turner, Friedrich, and Constable. Then Corot, the entry of photography with Le Gray, the brand new Impressionist skies and especially those of the greatest of them all, Claude Monet, present with 15 paintings. The epilogue creeps into the mid-twentieth century, as in the prologue with only one presence. When the sky, with Nicolas de Staël, is no longer what it towers above but what is within each. He the most torn painter of skies in the pictorial history of the twentieth century.

There will be many collateral events related to the two major exhibitions, which will often have as their designated venue the beautiful auditorium located inside the Centro Altinate San Gaetano.

“With Padua. The Wonder of Color, we choose to position ourselves as a city of reference in the art world. As a city we aim to offer visitors to these two beautiful exhibitions, the best reception. Both for the Paduans themselves and for those who will reach Padua on this occasion,” the mayor concluded.
