A journey between the art of Vasily Kandinsky and the music of John Cage: this is what the exhibition Kandinsky -> Cage intends to address. Music and Spiritual in Art scheduled from Nov. 11, 2017 to Feb. 25, 2018 in Reggio Emilia at Palazzo Magnani. The exhibition aims as much to explore the birth ofabstract art, of which Kandinsky was the first exponent, as it does the works of masters who were able to change the history of music.
Alongside a nucleus of about fifty works by the great Russian painter, the exhibition will display sketches of works by Richard Wagner, scores by Constantin Ciurlionis, an extraordinary selection of paintings by Arnold Schönberg (the great composer was a friend of Kandinsky’s: read our in-depth article on the subject here), works by Paul Klee and, again, by Nicolas De Staël and Fausto Melotti (the latter two linked to the figure of Luigi Magnani, musicologist as well as collector and owner of the Palazzo), as well as a selection of music-themed works by Giulio Turcato. The exhibition ends with a tribute to musician John Cage: works and audio and video documents will delve into his figure. An integral part of the exhibition will also be the reconstruction of an anechoic environment, the “hall of silence,” where a Robert Rauschenberg canvas will be displayed. The entire path of the exhibition will include musical accompaniments with sound bells that will allow visitors to enjoy music judiciously selected to match the works on display.
The exhibition is promoted by the Palazzo Magnani Foundation and Skira Editore with the participation of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, the Emilia Romagna Region, the Province of Reggio Emilia, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio Pietro Manodori, and the Reggio Emilia Chamber of Commerce. The project is curated by Martina Mazzotta and has an important Scientific Committee, chaired by Paolo Repetto and composed of curators and museum directors, musicologists, art historians and philosophers, including Michele Porzio and Gillo Dorfles.
Tickets: full 14 euros, concessions 12 euros (for students aged 18 to 26, friends of the Palazzo Magnani Foundation, Friends of the Theaters, over 65, disabled, military), concessions 8 euros (for students aged 6 to 18). Information at www.palazzomagnani.it.
