It opened on December 19, and will run until February 10, 2021, the exhibition Max Klinger. The Romantic Enigma, dedicated to the great Max Klinger (Leipzig, 1857 - Großjena, 1920) on the centenary of his death and organized in the rooms of the Engraving Gallery: thus visitable as it is a commercial gallery that does not fall under the restrictions that have affected cultural venues such as museums, cinemas, and theaters. The exhibition aims to illustrate some of the themes in the art of Klinger, a “figurative poet” as he called himself and “modern artist par excellence” according to De Chirico (who drew several cues from Klinger), as well as a central figure in the Central European art scene between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The exhibition presents the graphic work of Max Klinger, exhibiting three complete series of etchings, Eve and the Future of 1880, Intermezzi of 1881 and A Glove of 1881 (to the latter, one of the earliest representations of dreams in art history, our magazine devoted a detailed in-depth study). The suggestions of Klinger’s works, which take in the anguished universes and disruptive forces of love, death and the psyche, have over time been passed on to other artists and other arts: in the exhibition the public will find works by authors of his contemporaries (Willi Geiger, Otto Greiner, Richard Müller and Joseph Uhl) and by contemporaries inspired by his visionary world, who at a distance of a century try their hand at interpreting its romantic enigma: Vanni Cuoghi, Giorgio Bertelli, Franco Fanelli, Giuseppe Gallizioli, Fausto Gilberti, Giorgio Maria Griffa, Franco Matticchio, Alessandro Papetti, Francesco Parisi, Andrea Pedrazzini, Livio Scarpella and Velasco Vitali.
The exhibition is open daily, except Mondays, from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. Information can be found on the Engraving Gallery website.
