Villa Carlotta celebrates the 200th anniversary of Francesco Hayez's The Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet, one of his masterpieces, with a week of initiatives all dedicated to the opera.

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo on Lake Como is celebrating the 200th anniversary of one of its masterpieces, Francesco Hayez’sLast Kiss between Romeo and Juliet, created in 1823, with a week of initiatives all dedicated to the work. Special guided tours and workshops for adults and children will be held from Sept. 11 to 17.

At 11 a.m. on Sept. 13, Villa Carlotta will offer visitors an in-depth look at the iconographic fortune of the story of Romeo and Juliet in the figurative arts of the 19th century; on Sept. 15 at 11 a.m., the museum will instead offer an in-depth look at the technique with which the master executed the work, a focus to learn about Hayez’s creative process but above all his skillful use of color. On Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. there will be an animated reading aimed at children ages 4 to 9 in which the story of Romeo and Juliet will be read in the children’s version by Roberto Piumini. Finally, on Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m., there will be a visit-workshop for children aged 10 to 14 dedicated to Hayez’s pictorial rendering of textiles and clothes, and they will try to invent a new dress for Romeo and Juliet.

In addition, the facade of Villa Carlotta will be illuminated every evening with the image of the projection of the painting.

An initiative to celebrate the anniversary of one of Villa Carlotta’s iconic works. During this week, visitors will be able to share through social media their photos of the painting, using the hashtags #villacarlotta #bacio200 #lastkiss #ultimobacio.
