Genoa, Domenico Parodi's 17th-century "Nativity of St. Joseph" on display at the Royal Palace for the holidays

For the Christmas holidays, Palazzo Reale in Genoa is displaying the so-called 'St. Joseph's Crib,' a 1680-1690 work by Domenico Parodi.

In Genoa, Christmas at the Royal Palace is celebrated with a major exhibition: that of Domenico Parodi ’s (Genoa, 1672 - 1742) work depicting theAdoration of the Shepherds with Saints Victor, Crown and a Devotee, better known as the Nativity of St. Joseph. From Thursday, December 20, 2018, the public can see it throughout the festive season in the Royal Palace Ballroom.

The work, created between the late 1780s and the beginning of the following decade, reproduces the altarpiece executed by Jacopo da Ponte known as il Bassano (Bassano del Grappa, c. 1515 - 1592) for the high altar of the church of San Giuseppe in Bassano del Grappa, which is now preserved in the Civic Museum of the Venetian city.

The canvas is traditionally kept in the Salotto degli Stucchi Verdi of the Appartamento della Biblioteca (a precious space that will soon undergo a major restoration thanks to which it will become visitable) along with other works of Venetian ambit that were sold in 1743 to Gerolamo Ignazio Durazzo directly by the widow of the famous Genoese painter.

It is a scene of intimate contemplation, with the Virgin gently facing the Child and the shepherds kneeling to pay homage-a painting that goes on display and which, alongside Pasquale Navone ’s famous nativity statues included in the exhibition Maragliano 1664-1739. The Spectacle of Wood Sculpture in Genoa, intends to offer itself to the public with best wishes for a happy holiday season from the Royal Palace.
