Carrara, two meetings with Federico Giannini on the sidelines of the Novecento exhibition in Carrara

Two lectures in Carrara, at Palazzo Cucchiari, on Thursday, August 31, and Thursday, September 7, at 9:15 p.m., on the sidelines of the exhibition Novecento a Carrara. Artistic Adventures between the Two Wars, scheduled through October 29, 2022. The protagonists will be Gabriele d’Annunzio and marble sculpture in two talks given by Federico Giannini, director of Finestre sull’Arte. After last year’s lectures on Giovanni Fattori and Telemaco Signorini, Giannini thus returns with two more appointments organized by the Giorgio Conti Foundation in collaboration with Finestre sull’Arte.

The first lecture, scheduled for Thursday, August 31 at 9:15 p.m., is entitled Gabriele D’Annunzio and Versilia. A dream land, solitary, solemn, populated by mythological creatures: this is the Versilia of Gabriele d’Annunzio, who stayed on several occasions between Viareggio and Marina di Pietrasanta in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was among the pine forests and beaches of this land, which was experiencing the beginnings of its irrepressible tourist development, that the Vate found inspiration for Alcyone, his most famous and lauded poetic collection. Gabriele d’Annunzio’s poems were formed on an artistic imagery that was already present, that of the Symbolist culture of the late 19th century, and in turn inspired various artists, from Plinio Nomellini to Galileo Chini. In this meeting we will explore possible artistic references to D’Annunzio’s culture, looking at both the artists who may have provided D’Annunzio with cues and those who tried to translate his vast and imaginative poetic repertoire with works of art.

The second lecture, Thursday, Sept. 1 at 9:15 p.m., is titled Carrara Marble in Sculpture between the Two World Wars. From Adolfo Wildt to Arturo Dazzi, there were many artists who explored the various possibilities offered by marble sculpture between the 1920s and the 1930s. But not only that: marble is also one of the materials most often associated with the propaganda of the Fascist regime, since during Fascism marble, especially Carrara marble, was widely used in major works celebrating the regime. Marble was reminiscent of ancient Rome, reminiscent of the splendors of the Renaissance, and the history of the quarries thus ended up being exploited for the regime’s purposes. With a journey through the artworks of the period we will discover how marble became the protagonist of the art of the time.
