400 pop versions of Antonello's Annunciata: in Messina here is Mauro Drudi's "LEI" project

From Aug. 23 to Sept. 29, 2019, the church of Santa Maria Alemanna in Messina will host 'Her,' 400 pop versions of Antonello's Anunciata by Mauro Drudi.

The Vega Art Gallery in Messina, under the patronage of the Sicilian municipality, presents from August 23 to September 29, 2019, the project LEI, a pictorial reflection on woman, a monumental installation by Romanian artist Mauro Drudi. Inside the church of Santa Maria Alemanna, Messina, with the help of two large walls erected for the purpose, LEI will be installed in more than 400 pieces, 400 portraits in a pop version ofAntonello da Messina’s Annunciata, an absolute masterpiece that after more than five hundred years arrives, albeit in a completely different guise, in the places of origin of its author. Fresh from the successes in Fano, Syracuse and Cefalù, today Drudi’s works are guests of the Mandralisca Museum in Cefalù until December, the same museum that holds Antonello da Messina ’s famous Portrait of an Unknown Sailor, among other things, and has granted Drudi an exclusive room.

On two monumental walls inside the Church of Santa Maria Alemanna will be placed the numerous works representing a single, splendid face always the same but always different in colors, cuts, materials, perspectives and formats, ranging from 10 cm to two-meter pieces, and always capable of giving, in each of the different versions, intense suggestions.

In fact, the main theme concerns the condition of women in the world, or rather in worlds, namely the Western world, where women at least apparently enjoy rights and freedom, and the rest of the world, where the situation is often at the limits of the narratable. Within this framework, HER wants to take the viewer by the hand by involving him culturally, historically, artistically, and psychologically in order to deal with themes that concern precisely contemporary society in its imbalances, in its blatant injustices until arriving at perhaps the mostdelicate, dangerous but inevitable theme, namely man’s relationship with technology. LEI is an installation that intends to offer numerous levels of reading without sacrificing an initial aesthetic impact.
