National Gallery of Umbria presents children's guide with Pimpa

The National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia has equipped itself with a special children's guide featuring Pimpa and published by Franco Cosimo Panini Editore. Here's what the book looks like.

In Perugia, the reopening of the National Gallery of Umbria after a year of work(in-depth report here, interview with director Marco Pierini here) never ceases to bring surprises. One of the funniest ones, which we had already anticipated on these pages, is related to Pimpa, the little red-dotted dog, born from the pencil of Altan, one of the most brilliant Italian cartoonists, cartoonists and satirical authors, who is protagonist of the children’s guidebook, entitled Pimpa at the National Gallery of Umbria (32 pages, 8.50 euros, ISBN 9788857018447), produced by the National Gallery of Umbria and Franco Cosimo Panini Editore.

A book designed for young visitors, who will be accompanied precisely by Pimpa to discover the Perugia museum, a place full of treasures that tell the story and the protagonists of the art of this beautiful region. The itinerary, which begins right from the outside of the Palazzo dei Priori, home of the Gallery, with the griffin of Perugia welcoming the friendly little dog, features many games and activities to be done directly at the museum or once back home, a combination of photography and comics that combines the fantastic with the real, for an unforgettable visit. All while discovering the museum’s main masterpieces: from the Cappella dei Priori to Gentile da Fabriano’s Madonna and Child, from Beato Angelico’s Guidalotti Polyptych to Perugino’sAdoration of the Magi (the artist, moreover, will meet Pimpa directly in the book). Two pages, on the other hand, are reserved for the museum’s professions, with the various figures working in the institute being described to young readers.

Pimpa engages children in a journey through history by showing them important works ranging from sacred art of the Middle Ages to the Contemporary. Walking among paintings and sculptures, young readers will learn about artists such as Perugino and master the ancient technique of egg tempera. In the book’s light and manageable format, the route is marked by colorful strips that help them find their way through the Gallery’s rooms.

The guide’s experiential approach stimulates observation and enriches the visit through games, trivia and insights. In addition, inside Pimpa at the National Gallery of Umbria there are stickers, a detachable memory, with which children can also “assemble” their own personal polyptych by pasting them on the Gallery map that is immediately at the beginning, and a Pimpa silhouette to experiment with the dusting technique and learn while having fun.
