Save the painting by Ludovico Carracci preserved in Notre-Dame. From France comes the officialdom

Ludovico Carracci's 'Saint Bernardino' preserved in Notre-Dame Cathedral is safe and reportedly undamaged. The news is official.

The news is now official: the Saint Bernardine Saving Carpi from an Enemy Army, the painting by Ludovico Carracci (Bologna, 1555 - 1619) that was feared to have been lost during the devastating fire that hit Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris (where the work is kept) last April 15, is safe. The work was created in 1619 by the Bolognese painter for the Confraternity of the Patron of Carpi.

The official announcement came only today, Monday, August 5: Louvre officials communicated the good news to the management of the Museums of Palazzo Pio in Carpi, which, from the first hours after the fire, immediately got in touch with Paris to get news of the painting, which was formerly located in the Emilian city and was among the works that left for France with the Napoleonic spoliations, in the early 19th century. At the time of the fire, the canvas was in a room in the north tower of the cathedral: most of the works were evacuated from the cathedral on April 20, while Carracci’s had to wait until the following week. At the moment, the San Bernardino saving Carpi from an enemy army is in a storage room, and according to Louvre officials told Palazzo Pio director Manuela Rossi, the work was not damaged.

“This is wonderful news that we have been waiting for weeks, the news that came from Paris,” said Carpi Mayor Alberto Bellelli. “The attention given to us by French officials shows how historical and artistic heritage, beyond parochialism, really belongs to everyone, wherever it is, including that detail of the painting depicting our city in 1619 that Carpians were able to admire in the Palazzo dei Pio in the ’Rare Paintings’ exhibition that we set up in 2010 and for which we obtained the prestigious loan from the French Ministry of Cultural Heritage.”
