TheCarrara Academy in Bergamo is enriched with an important work, theSelf-portrait by Simone Peterzano (Venice, c. 1535 - Milan, 1599), a pupil of Titian and master of Caravaggio. The painting comes to the Bergamasque museum thanks to the donation of Augusta Monferini (1934 - 2022) and Maurizio Calvesi (1927 - 2020), art historians who identified Carrara as the ideal place to permanently preserve Simone Peterzano’s self-portrait, already the protagonist of the major exhibition organized by the museum in 2020. In honor of Monferini and Calvesi, an in-depth meeting, open to all, will be held on May 2 at 3:45 p.m. in Room 12.
Peterzano’s self-portrait joins the more than 260 donations that have followed since Carrara’s founding in 1796. Already exhibited right in Bergamo, as mentioned, in the exhibition Titian and Caravaggio in Peterzano that Carrara dedicated to the master in 2020 and that unfortunately was closed after a few weeks because of the pandemic, the painting is now visible in Room 11, together with Giovan Battista Moroni’s masterpieces, within the path of the collection recently rearranged on the second floor.
A generous gift that allows everyone to see the work of a crucial author in the history of art, long studied by Calvesi, who wrote his thesis discussed with Lionello Venturi precisely on Peterzano. A pupil of Titian in Venice (as he calls himself in the inscription at the bottom of the painting: SIMON. PETERZANUUS. VENETUS. TITIANI. ALUMNUS. / FECIT. MDLXXXVIIII) and master of Caravaggio in Milan, Peterzano is a painter of many qualities, as will also be highlighted in this conference.
Participants in the afternoon study dedicated to the important contributions to art history by Calvesi and Monferini are offered the opportunity to visit the museum and the current exhibition dedicated to Cecco del Caravaggio at an extraordinary rate of 5 euros. Admission to the conference is free with mandatory reservation by calling/texting +39 328 1721727 or emailing prenotazioni@lacarrara.it
