Vienna is the capital of music: many of the greatest composers of all time were born or lived in the Austrian capital, so the city offers places where music takes center stage.
Inaddition to the House of Music (Haus der Musik) at 30 Seilerstätte, in which visitors have the opportunity to take an immmersive and interactive journey into the world of music, with workshops and various experiences, the Mozart House(Mozarthaus) can also be visited in Vienna. If you thought Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ’s house was only in Salzburg, you don’t know the house where the great composer lived with his family from 1784 to 1787 in Vienna, exactly at number 5 Domgasse, near St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
It is the largest, most distinguished and most expensive apartment Mozart ever lived in, and it is theonly Viennese apartment that has been preserved to this day. And it was in this building that Mozart composed his finest works that have become world famous: The Marriage of Figaro and three of the six Haydn Quartets.
In the Mozarthaus the public has the opportunity to learn about many aspects of Mozart. Did you know, for example, that not only was he a musical genius, but that he also loved fun and being in the company of friends? And that he would wake up at six in the morning and compose from seven to nine? There will also be a chance to delve into his works, his personal and social situation, and to make a comparison between the Vienna of the present and the city at the time of the famous composer, when there were just over 50,000 inhabitants within the city walls, an area that now corresponds to the first district.
The fifteenth-century building where the Mozarthaus is located has been open to the public for more than seventy years, and since January 2006 a permanent exhibition has been opened inside the rooms where Mozart lived. The basement of the Mozarthaus has also been converted into an atmospheric event hall, renamed Bösendorfer Hall: concerts in particular are held here, but also lectures, presentations, corporate events, and private ceremonies such as weddings and birthdays.
Until October 2, 2022, the Mozarthaus also hosts a special exhibition by artist Oskar Stocker on women and Mozart. Mozart & Women: an exhibition by artist Oskar Stocker in collaboration with Mozarthaus Vienna aims to explore Mozart’s relationship with the women in his life and the female figures in his work. Stocker’s portraits of women give an indirect portrait of the composer himself: imprecise, sketchy and obscure. Oskar Stocker offers portraits of six women who influenced his life.
