Want to buy a house in a mountain village in Tuscany? The region pays you

To combat the depopulation of mountain villages, the Tuscany Region has launched a call for applications that provides grants to those who decide to buy a home in a mountain village under 5,000 inhabitants in Tuscany. There is time until July 27, here's how to do it.

Do you dream that your vacation spot can become your home? Do you dream of Tuscany when you return from vacation? Now for all those in love with the land of Dante there is a chance to go and live in one of those iconic villages typical of Tuscan landscapes. In fact, the Region has published a notice to provide a cash contribution to those who will decide to buy a house in one of the many municipalities under 5,000 inhabitants. It is a measure designed to stop the depopulation of inland areas and encourage residency in small municipalities using resources made available by Europe through the Italian Mountain Development Fund (Fosmit).

To apply there is time until 1 p.m. on July 27 next year, and you can only fill in through the special page on the Tuscany Region website(all info here), where there is also a list of municipalities affected by the measure. The call for proposals “Residenzialità in montagna 2024” aimed at encouraging and incentivizing the repopulation and socio-economic revitalization of Tuscany’s mountain areas provides, in detail, contributions to individuals for thepurchase of a property to be used as a residence and habitual abode in the mountain municipalities of Tuscany below 5,000 inhabitants, and this contribution may range from a minimum of 10,000 to a maximum of 30,000 euros but may not exceed 50 percent of the total expenses incurred for the costs related to the purchase of the property and its appurtenances. The call for applications has a budget of 2 million 800 thousand euros and all citizens, Italian or from another European Union state (or non-EU citizens holding a residence permit of not less than 10 years), who reside in a non-mountainous Italian municipality can apply.

The mountainous areas of Tuscany, Italy’s most wooded region, are certainly coveted for those seeking contact with nature and relaxation, mountains are in fact the foreigners who come to spend their retirement in Italy, especially Anglo-Saxons (so much so that in the 1990s because of the strong presence in countryside such as Chianti the diction of ’Chianti-shire’ was born, as if it were an English province). And the news of the ban also caught the attention of Americans so much so that the ’Travel’ section of USA Today devoted a page on its website to this opportunity. But, as the Florence-based Corriere Fiorentino noted in recent days, not specifying that a U.S. person cannot enjoy this benefit, it applies only to citizens of EU countries residing in Italy.

“The mountains,” said Tuscany President Eugenio Giani in presenting the announcement, “are a great environmental and cultural resource with an equally great economic value. The region is investing to significantly support the quality of life and development conditions of areas to which we want to continue to give constant and incisive action, and the call on residency by encouraging new lifestyles gives new life to places where new communities can grow and thus development and growth.”

For Stefania Saccardi, vice-president and councillor for internal areas notes, “Tuscany’s mountains are territories of unique beauty with villages to be rediscovered that are, however, paying the price of depopulation. Deciding to live in one of these municipalities is therefore a challenge and an opportunity, especially for young people, and the call, by giving a concrete chance to the mountains, also offers the opportunity for a new life choice.”
