Mexico, ancient Mayan city of Ichkabal opens to public tours as archaeological site

In Mexico, the ancient Mayan city of Ichkabal, south of Quintana Roo, has opened its doors to the public as an archaeological site. There are now 194 heritage sites of pre-Hispanic origin enabled for public visitation in Mexico.

In Mexico, after two years of fruitful dialogue and coordinated work between theNational Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and ejidal authorities, the ancient Mayan city of Ichkabal has opened its doors to the public as an archaeological site, in Quintana Roo. This opening, made possible through the Archaeological Zone Enhancement Program (Promeza), brings to 194 the number of heritage sites of pre-Hispanic origin enabled for public visitation in Mexico. The achievement was also made possible by the completion, on January 10, 2025, of a prior occupation agreement on 113 hectares signed by INAH and ejidal authorities. The signing of the document, which took place in Chetumal, was attended by INAH Director General Diego Prieto Hernández and the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, as witnesses of honor, and was was carried out by the head of the INAH Quintana Roo Center, Margarito Molina Rendón, the president of the Ejidal Commissariat of Ichkabal, Refugio Cano Gómez, and the representative of the Quintana Roo Agricultural Prosecutor’s Office, César Augusto Flores Ramos.

“This agreement gives legal certainty to the research, conservation and cultural dissemination project that INAH is carrying out in the archaeological zone, and which will benefit 1.65 ejidatarios (people who borrow land from the government to work tenporarily) and their families, who have always been willing to make agreements with municipal, state and federal governments,” said anthropologist Diego Prieto. “I am pleased that this final agreement has been reached and that dialogue has been prioritized. The world has the right to know about our great Mayan culture and that is why Quintana Roo, with twelve archaeological zones, is the state with the most heritage sites enhanced thanks to Promeza,” Prieto added.

As an archaeological site, Ichkabal, which is located south of Quintana Roo, stands out for having particularly tall structures, many of which exceed 40 meters in height, and which are commonly grouped in triadic clusters.

The archaeological site can be visited free of charge daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
