Coming from the United States, France and Germany are the tourists who are most present in Italy and spend the most

Nexi Tourism & Incoming Watch, an observatory that analyzes the spending behavior of tourists in Italy, is born. Coming from the United States, France and Germany are the tourists most present in our peninsula and those who spend the most.

From the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Ministry of Tourism with Nexi, the leading Italian PayTech in Europe, and Nomisma, an independent company that offers sectoral and territorial studies, comes the Nexi Tourism & Incoming Watch: the Observatory that will be designed, developed and implemented to photograph the contribution that tourism and culture can make to the country system through a detailed analysis of the card payment behavior of foreign tourists.

This first Observatory shows how the most tourists in Italy come from the United States, France and Germany, where the former prefer big cities, the Cinque Terre resorts, the Amalfi Coast and more generally Central Italy. The French choose the North West, Puglia, Basilicata and Sicily, while the destinations favored by German tourists are very diverse: Trentino-Alto Adige, Lake Garda, Sardinia and many of the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seaside resorts.

From the United States, France and Germany also come the tourists who spend the most. While the product categories in which visitors from the United States, Germany and France spend the most are hotels and restaurants, the luxury sector (clothing, jewelry stores and department stores) is preferred by most non-European tourists. Finally, data analysis shows that spending by foreign tourists accounts for more than 10 percent of total transactions in most of our provinces, with peaks in Venice (29.1 percent), Siena (20.2 percent) and Florence (19.9 percent).

The Memorandum of Understanding aims to enhance the cognitive heritage and innovative data available to Nexi, thus strengthening the knowledge of the tourism phenomenon and providing policymakers with an additional tool capable of supporting policy decisions consistent with statistical evidence of innovative analysis of tourism flows, in line with the objectives of the Strategic Tourism Development Plan for the period 2023-2027.
