Windows on Art launches 5 video lectures on the relationship between Dante and the arts

On the occasion of the seven hundredth anniversary date of Dante Alighieri ’s passing (he died in Ravenna between September 13 and 14, 1321), Windows on Art launches a new publishing project, Windows on Art Academy, which opens precisely with five video lectures dedicated to the relationship between Dante Alighieri and the arts. With a journey spanning eight centuries, we take you, through five in-depth lectures given by as many experts, to discover how different eras viewed the works of the Supreme Poet.

We begin with Dante according to Renaissance artists (curated by Pietro Toso): what is the relationship between Dante and the figurative arts between the 15th and 16th centuries? The talk is constructed in a path that aims to analyze the relationship between the poet and painting in the Renaissance period, with a particular focus on Liguria, where depictions drawn from Dante’s imagery had a singular diffusion. We then move on to Dante in art between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (curated by Vincenzo Stanziola): a talk to see how in the early modern age the Divine Comedy and its author were the subject of multiple types of representation, from illustrations of the poem to works with a more properly celebratory character. We continue with Dante today: Dante images in contemporary art (curated by Giorgia Salerno), to discover how Dante’s work is still relevant and a source of inspiration for today’s artists. Then here is Virgil in the history of art (curated by Lorenzo Bonoldi), to look at all the representations of Virgil’s image in art of all times, including mosaics, marbles, illuminated manuscripts, paintings and more. Finally, with The Arts in Dante’s Time (edited by Francesca Interguglielmi) we will see how Dante’s repertoire was received by his contemporaries, and what art forms Dante could see when he was alive.
