Having found an agreement between the PD and the 5 Star Movement to form a new government, headed by outgoing President Giuseppe Conte, it is time for totoministri: so who will be the next minister of cultural heritage? Let’s try some guesses, with six (plus one) possible names for the next tenant of the Collegio Romano.
Alberto Bonisoli
Outgoing minister, nominated by many sources for possible reappointment after his term in the first Conte government. Born in 1961 in Castel d’Ario (Mantua), a manager by profession, in recent days he also received theendorsement of Beppe Grillo, who evidently will have appreciated his work. Bonisoli, however, has an uphill road ahead of him: first, because his reform of the ministry has displeased practically everyone (even members of his own party), and then because the PD is unlikely to deprive itself of a ministry that holds a high value, above all symbolic, for the Dems. For this reason, it is highly likely that the next minister of cultural heritage will come from their ranks.

Flavia Piccoli Nardelli
Born in Trento in 1946, Flavia Piccoli Nardelli has a long-standing relationship with culture: she was also chair of the Culture Committee in the Chamber of Deputies in the past legislature, from 2015 to 2018. The law for the promotion of reading, approved this summer by the House, and particularly appreciated not only in Dem circles, is her creation. She is currently still a member of the Culture Committee in the House.

Andrea Marcucci
Class of 1965, born in Barga (Lucca), Andrea Marcucci was one of the main protagonists of the Pd-M5S negotiation and is currently group leader of the Pd in the Senate. He also has a long relationship with culture: he was undersecretary for cultural heritage during the Prodi II government (from 2006 to 2008) and in the last legislature, from 2013 to 2018, he served as chairman of the Culture Committee in the Senate. The likelihood seems high that Marcucci will have a role in the new government, however, everyone is wondering where: therefore, some give him at foreign affairs, some at infrastructure, and some in other roles still.

Anna Ascani
An Umbrian from Città di Castello, born in 1987, she started in politics at a very young age and entered the Chamber of Deputies when she was just 25. A member of the culture committee in the House, in 2016 she was listed by Forbes as one of the 30 most influential people under 30 in European politics. In 2017, she was appointed head of the Pd’s Culture Department (and is currently the party’s vice-president), and in recent months she has not spared criticism, often very harsh, of the current minister Bonisoli, especially regarding the reform of the ministry.

Paola De Micheli
A native of Piacenza, born in 1973, in the past legislature she distinguished herself above all for her role as extraordinary government commissioner for the reconstruction of the areas hit by the earthquake in central Italy and is therefore very familiar with the mechanisms that regulate cultural heritage in Italy. For her, however, the doors of the Ministry of Economic Development or those of the offices of the presidency of the council of ministers could also open, according to many, (De Micheli, moreover, has already served as undersecretary of state for the presidency of the council under the Gentiloni government).

Gianni Cuperlo
Among the ministers in the “Zingarettian” quota, there are rumors of a possible role for Gianni Cuperlo (born 1961 in Trieste). A longtime politician who started from militancy in the Italian Communist Youth Federation, he has been a deputy in three terms but currently does not hold parliamentary office. Cuperlo has always shown a closeness to the issue of culture.

The outsider
So far the most likely political names, but it is not certain that at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities could not end up with an outsider, a technician with an important curriculum, as in recent hours Beppe Grillo also hoped, who for technical ministries has said he prefers personalities “from the world of expertise outside politics.” And in this case the assumptions are wide open.
