Want to eat a sandwich in front of the Trevi Fountain? For you, a 240 euro fine

Measure against food consumption and disrespectful behavior in Rome: fines of up to 240 euros for eating a sandwich or washing in the Trevi Fountain and other historic fountains.

WithMayor’s Ordinance Number 82 of June 12, 2017, Rome’s Mayor Virginia Raggi introduced measures to counter “episodes contrary to the rules of urban decorum such as the consumption of food or drink near monuments or artistic fountains, often involving the abandonment of waste of various kinds, food and non-food.” The measure, valid until Oct. 31 and triumphantly presented with a Youtube video, adds to the measures that already prevent bathing in fountain waters and introduces bans on pouring liquids and throwing objects (other than the traditional coin toss), washing animals and clothing, letting animals drink, sitting, climbing or engaging in any other conduct that is not compatible with the natural destination of the public good, bivouacking and consuming food or drink. The ban covers not only fountains, but also their unspecified appurtenant areas. Fines of 40 to 240 euros are expected.

Included in the measure are the Trevi Fountain, those in Piazza del Popolo, the Barcaccia, the fountain in Piazza della Rotonda, the Water Show, the Acqua Paola Fountain, the fountains in Piazza Navona (Quattro Fiumi, Moro and Neptune), the one in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the Fountain of the Turtles, the Fountain of the Triton, the Acqua Felice Exhibition, the fountains of the Navicella, the Terrina, the Naiads, the Scossacavalli Square, the Goddess Rome, Campo de’ Fiori, the Tritons in Bocca della Verità Square, and Colonna Square. Also, the Fountain of the Dioscuri at the Quirinale, the fountains in Piazza Farnese, the fountain of the Lateran Obelisk, the fountain in Piazza Nicosia, the Fountain of the Amphorae, the fountain of Santa Maria Maggiore, the fountain in Piazza Cairoli, the fountain of the Catechumens, the fountains of the Two Seas, and those in Piazza Campitelli, the Viminale, and Piazza dell’Aracoeli. Tourists are warned: from now on, the sandwich will have to be consumed elsewhere.
