Six major Italian museums seeking directors. Call for applications online, will be evaluated by commission and chosen by minister

MiBAC is looking for directors of six major museums. Online the international call for applications, they will be evaluated by a commission and chosen by Minister Bonisoli.

Six major Italian museums-the Reggia di Caserta, the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, the Pompeii Archaeological Park, the Royal Palace in Genoa, the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park and the Appia Antica Archaeological Park-are officially looking for new directors. In fact, the current directors either have their terms expiring or will go on to direct other museums, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage therefore needs to quickly find figures of depth who can take over the reins. Thus, the two international calls for applications have already been published on the MiBAC website, the first for the first three museums, which are headed by a director who will have a general managerial level position, and the others, which, in contrast, are headed by a director with a non-general managerial level position. For both, the appointment will be for three years: the former will receive a gross salary of 145,058.57 euros per year, the latter 78,791.38 euros, in addition to any performance pay that will depend on the directors’ annual evaluations and the amount of funds available.

Applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree, other qualifications related to the protection, management and enhancement of cultural heritage, scientific publications and awards, specific professional experience (either in protection, management and enhancement, or in the direction or management of museums), expertise on the collections of the museum for which one has applied, experience in communication, fund raising, management of boards of directors or scientific committees, and preparation and implementation of agreements with public and private entities.

The selection process will have as its first stage the evaluation of the candidates’ resumes by a committee that will choose up to a maximum of ten candidates for each institution. The candidates will then be called for an interview at the MiBAC headquarters, and at the end of the interviews the Commission will identify a trio of candidates for each institute to submit to the minister. Finally, the minister will identify the individual directors on the basis of the analysis conducted by the Commission and on the basis of the Commission’s final judgment, while still taking into account any preferences indicated by the participants in the motivation letter attached to the application. The appointment will then be made by decree of the President of the Council of Ministers, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage.
