The prime minister in charge, Giuseppe Conte, also spoke about the enhancement of cultural heritage in his speech at the Quirinal Palace this morning, after being entrusted with the task of forming a new government by President of the Republic Sergio Matterella.
Conte spoke of cultural heritage in listing the lines that will have to inspire the government’s action: “It will not be a government against,” Conte said, “it will be a government for the good of the citizens, to modernize the country, to make our nation even more competitive in the international context, but also more just, more supportive and inclusive. I will realize a government under the sign of novelty: this is what the political forces that have announced their willingness to be part of it are also asking me to do. Now is the time for a new season, a broad season of reform, of revitalization, of hope, that offers the country answers and also certainties. I propose again to recreate a working team that will dedicate itself unceasingly, with all its skills and energy, to offering our children the opportunity to live in a better country, a country in which education is of quality and is open to all, a country at the forefront of research in the most sophisticated technologies, that excels internationally in environmental protection, in the protection of biodiversity, in the protection of the seas, that has safe infrastructures, efficient networks, that is fed mainly by renewable energies, that values common goods and artistic, cultural heritage, that permanently integrates ecosustainable well-being into its political agenda, a country that removes inequalities of all kinds, social, territorial, gender inequalities, that is a role model internationally in the protection of people with disabilities, that does not let its youthful energies dissipate outside its borders, but rather is a country that is strongly attractive to all young people living abroad, that sees a Mezzogiorno finally flourishing with all its riches (human, natural, cultural), a country in which the public administration is not permeable to corruption, is friendly to citizens and businesses, a country with an even more fair, even more efficient, where everyone (but really everyone) pays taxes, but pays them less.”
But there is also room for culture in another sense: in fact, Conte said he has often evoked the formula of a “new Humanism.” “I never thought it was the slogan of a government, I always thought it was the ideal horizon for an entire country,” he said. The president in charge then made it known that he had misgivings about accepting a new post, but that he overcame them knowing that in his first term he worked in the interest of citizens.
