Francesco Spano, the chief of staff of Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, resigned today from the post he was given only a few days ago. His tenure thus lasts little more than a week, nine days to be exact: he had been appointed only last Oct. 14.
The reasons for the resignation are explained in a letter addressed to the minister and published on the ministry’s website: “With painful reflection I am determined to resign from the role of Chief of Culture Cabinet with which you wished to honor me. The context that has come about, not without unpleasant personal attacks, no longer allows me to maintain the serenity of thought that is necessary to carry out this very important role. In the exclusive interest of the Administration, therefore, I consider it my duty to take a step back. This does not, of course, prevent me from expressing my deep gratitude for the esteem and support you have shown me without hesitation.”
The Tuscan lawyer, born in 1977, had been at the center of a controversy in 2017 involving the allocation of resources for the Council Presidency’s UNAR (National Anti-Racial Discrimination Office): following the case, Spano resigned at the time as well. Another case is now looming on the horizon: in fact, the television program Report has announced that an investigation concerning the same ministry will be broadcast in Sunday’s episode, but which, however, does not concern former minister Sangiuliano.
