According to the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Dario Franceschini, tourism will be one of the first sectors to restart after the crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. He said this this morning during his speech at the IX Steering Committee for International Italy organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Tourism,” the minister acknowledged, “is the sector hit hardest by the crisis. The pandemic has dragged Italian tourism into a desert with huge losses and so many businesses that need help.” It is, according to Franceschini, “a dramatic one, aggravated by the fact that, in 2019, at least 50 percent of tourism in Italy was international tourism. Today we need to help tourism businesses and workers overcome the difficulties.”
However, Franceschini is convinced, “we know that tourism will come back impressive and restart before other sectors. Once the pandemic is over, people will feel like traveling, and Italy is at the top of everyone’s desires in the world. We have to prepare for that moment. The Tourism Strategic Plan that we are beginning to update pointed out paths and it remains valid. We have to use this phase to build the possibility of attracting a large, but quality, educated tourism with spending capacity, not the cheap and disrespectful one that bites and flees and leaves nothing behind. The danger then is that we will return to a situation of super crowding, especially of art cities, and the need to govern exponential flows of tourists.”
“For this series of reasons,” the minister pointed out, “we have indicated some requests to be included in the Recovery: a great redevelopment of accommodation facilities, material infrastructures such as high speed and immaterial ones such as digital ones, the enhancement of minor Italy, the Italy of villages, of historical railways, of slow food. And finally, a great promotion campaign, which we are doing together with Maeci, that points to the differentiation of tourist attractions, but also to major events, such as the year of Dante. We are working with our facilities in the world because every event must aim at building a national identity and promoting tourism in the country.”
Franceschini: "after Covid, tourism will become impressive again. Here's what we're doing." |
