The winner of the Italian edition of Wiki Loves Monuments, the world’s largest photo contest organized by Wikimedia Italy, which this year had religious buildings as its main theme, is the photo depicting the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
In fact, the award ceremony for the winning photos of the Italian edition of Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 was held on Saturday, December 2, in Rome, in the Church of Santa Maria in Grottapinta. There were more than 52,000 photos uploaded for this edition, with 946 participants-the highest numbers worldwide. As every year, a pre-jury of volunteers and the jury of experts selected the best shots, five of which were selected in the religious buildings ranking, another five, considered the best in the general section, were awarded for the same.
The initiative aims to enhance the Italian cultural heritage in the world, contributing to the free sharing on the web of images of monuments, accessible and reusable for free by anyone for any purpose. Thanks to the uploading of images, it is also possible to enhance and publicize monuments that might otherwise remain unknown to most, thus supporting research, study, but also the tourist rediscovery of lesser-known territories.
For this edition, the contest was organized in collaboration with FIAF, with the patronage of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Roman Curia and the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, the National Association of Italian Municipalities, as well as ICOM Italy. With this collaboration, it was possible to photograph more than 60 thousand churches. First place goes to Florence - Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, a photo by user FrancescoSchiraldi85 who captured the historic building with Brunelleschi’s dome at sunset, followed by an interior view of the Baroque dome of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, a shot by Francescomarraccini. Third place goes to Nature and Architecture, a shot by Abbrey82 in which the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Calascio, Abruzzo, is framed by the mountain panorama. Right at the tail end is the splendid view of the cloister of Monreale Cathedral, the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture in Palermo captured by Dariolp83. Closing out the category awardees is the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi during the blue hour, with a photo by Monica Rondini that plays on perspective.
