What does the photographic portrait of the Covid-19 era look like? Roman photographer Carlotta Domenici De Luca (Rome, 1977) imagined it with the project #iorestoincam, which explores the theme of portraiture during the pandemic. Using her Nikon D750 (Nikon is a partner in the project), a computer, and a video call connection, the artist began taking portraits as the lockdown began, and her #iorestoincam will end in March 2021, exactly one year later. They are, essentially, portraits taken with the camera on video call.
The first to be captured was her father, sitting on video call as he watched her, and in the background scrolled the voice of medical bulletins and news about the progress of the epidemiological situation. Her father’s gaze, the artist explained, gave her peace of mind, and so, almost as a joke, Carlotta took a photograph of him. Looking at her father’s portrait taken in such a new way, so different but so attuned to the period that was being lived, the artist realized that she could tell the story of this period that no one expected and that radically changed everyone’s way of life.
Carlotta Domenici De Luca thus began to involve friends, and by word of mouth #iorestoincam reached every corner of the world, even to a great many strangers; people like this project because it is first and foremost a team effort and because it is a way to affirm their existence. The network has turned out to be a window to endless scenarios, situations and people, and it has done the rest.
“To date,” says the photographer, “I have taken 750 shots (like my Nikon D750!) and portrayed 900 people, some friends but most strangers.” The photographer has thus created a bridge between the people who are sharing this experience, and the result will be a book that will represent a piece of history, the story of those who have lived through this pandemic, a way to exorcise loneliness, to remember that you will soon come back to life and meet in person.
The project is still open: those who would like to be portrayed have until March 9, 2021, and can ask Carlotta to make their portrait to become part of this big puzzle, a kind of big digital family, rich in nuance and individuality. It will be enough to write to foto@carlottadomenicideluca.it.
