Eight great contemporary photographers brought together under the sign of the sun: this is the project of Maison Veuve Clicquot, which presents a collaboration with the Magnum Photos agency. Since photography is a collaboration that takes place between the artist and light, particularly that of the sun, an inexhaustible source of inspiration, our main source of light, without which no photographer could exercise his or her art, the theme chosen is precisely that of the sun, which offers photographers a myriad of emotions to capture and communicate.
Inspired by the unique connection between photographers and the Sun, Maison Veuve Clicquot begins a new cultural chapter in its history. Thus, in a world premiere, eight photographers present their personal response to the Maison’s brief: creative carte blanche to convey their emotions, inspired by the Sun, through photography. Working simultaneously on five continents,Steve McCurry, Alex Webb, Trent Parke, Olivia Arthur, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Cristina de Middel, Nanna Heitmann and Newsha Tavakolian present one or more moments related to the Sun theme, in eight different countries, sometimes in their own, sometimes in a destination they love.
Their free and personal interpretations are captured in 40 never-before-seen photographs, each an illustration of the power of the Sun. Cristina de Middel’s bright and imaginative images convey a feeling of pure joy and lightness of being, while Olivia Arthur’s very personal photographs recall the serenity of childhood summers. For Newsha Tavakolian, the Sun is a soothing and nurturing presence. Her images tell a story of hope and women’s empowerment, while Lindokuhle Sobekwa celebrates everyday miracles: a sunset, flowers opening their petals, the shimmer of the sun’s rays. Nanna Heitmann’s theater series depicts the osmosis of the elements and honors the Sun as the source of all life, the force that connects us all. The majestic studies performed by Steve McCurry on Fuji-san, Japan, capture moments of pure rapture and contemplation: an ode to the grandeur of the elements.
Alex Webb’s celebratory images and vivid colors are due solely to the generous presence of the Sun: in a play of light and shadow, dark and faded silhouettes parade before us like so many layered lives. Trent Park’s majestic portraits of the setting sun read like symbolic images of a new departure, another round of life’s merry-go-round, and the presence of eternity in all things.
“Maison Veuve Clicquot,” says President Jean-Marc Gallot, “is thrilled to collaborate with eight world-renowned photographers, the true lifeblood of the most legendary photographic institution, Magnum. The exhibition confirms Veuve Clicquot’s deep commitment to culture and conveys our message of optimism to the whole world.”
The collaboration resulted in a traveling exhibition, entitled Emotions of the Sun, which can be visited in Milan from April 15 to 21 at Garden Senato, in the heart of the city, in a space specially created by French designer Constance Guisset. Completing the exhibition are the Clicquot Café and the Solaire Clicquot Boutique. “Designing the space for this exhibition,” says Constance Guisset, designer for Maison Veuve Clicquot, “allowed me to bring together two integral elements of Maison Veuve Clicquot’s identity: culture and design.” Emotions of the Sun is presented in collaboration with independent curator and photography historian Pauline Vermare. The exhibition features 40 photographs whose sizes and formats vary according to the nature of each work.
Veuve Clicquot will install a dedicated boutique, presenting the best of the Maison: a selection of photography books and design objects, the volume published for the Maison’s 250th anniversary, the exhibition poster, and its most iconic Cuvées. There will also be a coffret containing a selection of the photographs from Emotions of the Sun, with the artist’s electronic signature, available in a limited edition at the boutique and selected bookstores.
The traveling exhibition is accompanied by a menu based on the theme “Sun in your plate,” featuring specially created preparations by starred chefs and emerging culinary talents that evoke the Sun and celebrate the beginning of spring. Inspired by seasonal vegetables, fruits and produce, the chefs’ “sunny” creations celebrate the emotional appeal of aromas, flavors and textures, paired with Maison Veuve Clicquot Champagnes. In Milan, the inaugural event will feature the creations of chefs Jean Imbert of Plaza Athénée in Paris, Mory Sacko of MoSuke Paris, Valentina Rizzo of Farmacia dei Sani in Ruffano, Lecce, Italy, and Karime Lopez, the first Mexican woman chef to earn a Michelin star at Gucci Osteria in Florence. Signature dishes will be served all day, paired with selected Veuve Clicquot Cuvées.
