Overall winner of the SIPA 2021, Siena International Photo Awards, was the shot that wentaround the world in just a few hours for its strong emotional charge: it is Hardship of Life by Turkish photographer Mehmet Aslan, which depicts the embrace between Munzir and Mustafa, a father and son maimed as a result of the war in Syria.
The Siena Awards has started a fundraiser to help the two protagonists of the winning photo. The goal of the fundraiser is to try to change Munzir and Mustafa’s lives, to give them a future and to turn the spotlight back on the international drama in Syria. Munzir lost his right leg to a bomb that fell while he was walking in a bazaar in Idlib, Syria, while his son Mustafa was born without his lower and upper limbs as a result of tetramelia, a deformity caused by his mother Zeynep’s taking drugs that were also affected by nerve gas during the war in Syria. Mustafa will need electronic prostheses in the future, which are currently not yet available in Turkey.
Any overfunding will be donated to Doctors Without Borders and will go toward a program to rehabilitate and support people who have suffered amputations due to the war in Syria.
“Together we can all try to realize a dream that started with the power of photography,” says Luca Venturi, artistic director of the Siena Awards. "With this fundraiser, which we strongly wanted after the great emotional wave generated by the winning photo of SIPA 2021, we want to join forces, in every part of the world, to concretely help Munzir and Mustafa’s family to make prostheses, supporting them also economically in order to improve their living conditions. We hope to go further and also help Doctors Without Borders to make a small contribution to so many people maimed by the conflict."
The fundraiser has been opened on the GoFundMe platform and to contribute you can click on the link https://www.gofundme.com/f/can-a-photo-make-a-difference.
