National Geographic, among the most representative photos of 2020 Canova | Thorvaldsen exhibition

Among the fifty-four most representative photos of 2020, National Geographic chooses the exhibition Canova | Thorvaldsen and the Pandemic.

National Geographic has included two images from Intesa Sanpaolo in a special issue chronicling 2020: among the fifty-four images considered the most representative of the past year, the international edition of the famous magazine of articles and photo reports selected a shot from the exhibition Canova Thorvaldsen. The Birth of Modern Sculpture set up at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan’s Piazza Scala and an image depicting the pandemic drama in one of its most difficult moments.

The first was taken by Gabriele Galimberti and Paolo Woods during the March-April lockdown inside the Milan exhibition space as part of The COVID-19 Visual Project, created through a partnership between the international festival Cortona On The Move and Intesa Sanpaolo. The second was taken in Novara by Alex Majoli.

The two images were selected from 1.7 million shots perveived and archived by National Geographic and included in a special issue that aims to narrate through the evocative power of photographs the 2020s. Both are published on the Festival’s multimedia platform The COVID-19 Visual Project. A Time of Distance, a constantly updated permanent archive that, through the languages of visual storytelling (photos, videos, texts, sounds), has documented the impact on the lives of millions of people around the world during the past year.

Intesa Sanpaolo’s commitment to culture, particularly through photography as a tool for social inquiry, is thus recognized in an initiative implemented by the Bank’s Culture Project in collaboration with Cortona On The Move. Intesa Sanpaolo involves photography in numerous initiatives, including the enhancement of the Publifoto Archive, and the birth, planned for late 2021-early 2022, of the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin’s Piazza San Carlo, the Group’s fourth museum, which will be mainly dedicated to photography and the digital world.
