Monopoly, sunrise bathing ritual becomes a live photography session

One of Italy’s leading photographers, Massimo Vitali (Como, Italy, 1944), to photograph one of the highlights of theApulian summer: the traditional sunrise bathing that takes place every year in Monopoli on Sept. 1 and brings together the inhabitants of the towns and villages scattered along the Costa dei Trulli and Valle d’Itria. In fact, it is believed that sunrise bathing on Sept. 1 ensures good health throughout the winter.

On this moment so important to the community, Vitali took a series of shots as part of his multi-year beach photography project. Thus, in Monopoli, in collaboration with his gallery(Mazzoleni), Vitali took the lead in Cooking Show. Live Photography, a live photo session that Massimo Vitali designed especially for the 2022 edition of Panorama, the exhibition organized by Italics in Monopoli from September 1 to 4, 2022. Italics is a consortium that brings together over sixty galleries of ancient, modern and contemporary art active throughout Italy, and Panorama is the story that ITALICS dedicates periodically to some of the most extraordinary locations in the Italian landscape. After the first edition presented last year in Procida, this year the chosen venue was precisely Monopoli.

Massimo Vitali’s photography session took place in Cala di Porta Vecchia: such a special moment for Monopoli, a ritual and symbolic collective plunge, was thus captured by Massimo Vitali who took a series of shots. “It was a spiritual experience,” Vitali wrote on his Instagram account thanking the city of Monopoli.
