Twenty-five years of life after coming out: this is the meaning of Fags, the photographic project of Jacopo Benassi (La Spezia, 1970). Published by NERO Editions on the occasion of the exhibition Jacopo Benassi. Void, curated by Elena Magini and underway at the Centro Pecci in Prato, Fags (“fags” in English) is presented as an unprecedented and intimate project by the artist, revolving around themes such as sexuality, gender, the body, and self-portraiture: a voyeuristic journey on sexuality, far from stereotypes, that crosses the author’s obsessions and self-representations. The book, produced in Italian and English versions, contains a conversation between Jacopo Benassi and Elena Magini that analyzes the genesis and nuances of the project, contextualizing it within the photographer’s artistic practice.
“Fags,” said Benassi, “is the book that encompasses images from twenty-five years of my life. Twenty-five years since the day I declared my homosexuality in 1995: it is a path that has left an indelible mark on me. I put everyone on the same level, even in this human project made up of encounters that I wanted to document. It is a reportage of my life that served me to understand who I was and who I am and also to accept it.”
The release of the book is accompanied by a special campaign: by purchasing a Jacopo Benassi photograph from the Fags series, produced in a limited edition of 100 signed copies, it will be possible to support the cultural activities of the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art in Prato. This fundraising initiative was conceived by the museum on the occasion of the publication of the book, which will be presented with an online meeting, part of the museum’s digital programming. Benassi’s photograph can be purchased for 150 euros along with the photo book. The photograph measures 15x21 cm, fine art print on matt cotton paper, print run, as mentioned, 100 signed copies. It can be reserved by writing to sviluppo@centropecci.it. The Pecci Center thanks the artist and the Francesca Minini Gallery for making the initiative possible.
