On Saturday, May 11 at the Oblate Library in Florence, an award ceremony was held for the Folon photography contest : between dream and reality, organized by the City of Florence and the Folon Foundation with the collaboration of the photography group "Il Cupolone APS," on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon (Uccle, 1934 - Principality of Monaco, 2005). The contest aimed to raise awareness of the artist’s works distributed in the municipal area and to photograph them in their most artistic aspects.
The Belgian artist had a special relationship with Florence, and at the behest of Paola Ghiringhelli, the artist’s widow, following the anthological exhibition held at Forte Belvedere in 2005, ten bronze sculptures and two plaster casts were donated to the City of Florence. Indeed, Florence is among the cities in the world with the greatest concentration of his art. Nine are on display in the Rose Garden under Piazzale Michelangelo: Un oiseau (1993), Chat-oiseau (1994), Chat (1996), Vingt-cinquième pensée (2001), Méditerranée (2001), Panthère (2003), Je me souviens (2003), Partir (2005), L’envol (2005). The bronze statue Walking (2003), on the other hand, is located in the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati, headquarters of the Region, while the bronze fountain Pluie - Rain, three meters high, donated as a result of the 2003 Social Forum, can be seen on Lungarno Aldo Moro. The work The Man of Peace was purchased by the Rotary Club and then donated to the City of Florence and placed in 2005 in Children and Girls of Beslan Square.
The Folon: between dream and reality contest was open to all photography lovers and the proposed theme could be interpreted by photographers with maximum artistic freedom and expression. There were 78 participants in the contest with 400 works, and given the success of the initiative and the quality of the competing photos, the organizers decided to double the number of works awarded, which were six instead of the three originally planned.
Present at the awards ceremony were Florence City Councillor Maria Federica Giuliani, President of the photography group “Il Cupolone APS” Simone Sabatini and Vice President Antonella Tomassi. The contest participants were welcomed by a rich audience.
Following are the names of the awarded photographers: Giuseppe Pisana (first prize), Pierfrancesco Baroni (second prize), Gianni Boradori (third prize), Carlo Marchi (fourth prize), Marco Berni (fifth prize), Francesco Sabatini (sixth prize).
