The new issue of Vanity Fair that comes out today, April 8, 2020, dedicates its cover, drawn by artist Francesco Vezzoli who took up Lucio Fontana’s cuts, toall of Italy “wounded” by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. The cover, publisher Condé Nast explains, is part of a trilogy on the emergency: the first cover was dedicated to Milan, and the second to workers coping with the emergency (with proceeds from the issue donated to Bergamo’s Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital). Vezzoli’s work, titled #LItaliasiamonoi, will be auctioned and the proceeds will be donated to charity to support businesses affected by the emergency.
The hashtag, Condé Nast points out, “wants to celebrate that Italian unity and creativity that have always allowed this country to make the best of the worst situations it has historically faced.” The cover therefore is not only a wound, but also an open glimmer of the future. The issue out today features the voices of Nobel laureates, philosophers, CEOs, managers, poets, artists, and designers reflecting on the world ahead after the virus and how to deal with the emergency.
Among the contributors are Nobel laureate in economics Joseph Stiglitz describing his new vision of the state in the global marketplace after the coronavirus, economist and former labor minister Enrico Giovannini analyzing the Italian economic situation, philosopher Silvano Petrosino discussing the new sense of time, designers Mariagrazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli writing two thought-provoking letters on the state and future of fashion, thefashion expert Li Edelkoort describing the trends to come in the creation and production of goods, Salone del Mobile president Claudio Luti addressing the government directly, director Luca Guadagnino analyzing the world of cinema and the future of entertainment, and singer-songwriter Tommaso Paradiso writing about the importance of knowing the past to understand tomorrow.
