Aworld record for a painting by Pieter Coecke van Aelst (Aalst, 1502 - Brussels, 1550): at anauction of old paintings held yesterday, June 9, at Dorotheum in Vienna, an altarpiece by the Flemish sixteenth-century artist was sold for 1,137,800 euros. It is an oil on panel depicting theAdoration of the Magi made in 1523, in the artist’s youthful period. Originally conceived for a private chapel or oratory, the high quality of the painted surface and preparatory sketch, revealed by infrared reflectography, places the work among the finest depictions of the biblical subject in Flanders at the time. Previous owners of the work, which was estimated at between 400,000 and 600,000 euros, include the King of the Netherlands, William II, who was on the throne in the first half of the 19th century.
The auction marked the resumption of the international event with an audience in attendance, and significant bids were recorded, including four panels depicting the Passion of Christ from southern Germany that reached 815,800 euros, Jusepe de Ribera’s St. Joseph that reached bids of 588,900 euros, and Lot and His Daughters by Massimo Stanzione that reached 393,700 euros.
