Will curators have to find another job? A robot will be the curator of the 2022 Bucharest Biennale

The 2022 edition of the Bucharest Biennial will be curated by an artificial intelligence: will curators have to change jobs?

The 10th edition of the Bucharest Biennale, to be held in 2022, will have a very special curator: in fact, the selection of artists will be entrusted to a robot. This was announced by the event’s creators, Răzvan Ion and Eugen Rădescu. The Romanian event, born in 2005 and always organized by the Pavilion newspaper, will thus be the first art exhibition that will not have a human being at the artistic direction, but anartificial intelligence, called Jarvis: the decision to appoint it as curator was taken unanimously by the board of the Bucharest Biennial.

Jarvis is an artificial intelligence system created by the Vienna-based company Spinnwerk (which will co-organize the 2022 edition of the Bucharest Biennale), and her name refers to the artificial intelligence of Marvel’s Iron Man. In order to “prepare” Jarvis for his role, organizers let it be known, it will take two years of work for him to learn the curatorial craft, employing material used for undergraduate and master’s courses at the most prestigious universities. In addition, the 2022 Bucharest Biennial will have pavilions that can be visited through virtual reality in addition to the normal physical spaces.

The 2022 Bucharest Biennial will, as mentioned, be the world’s first exhibition curated by an artificial intelligence, and who knows what the results will be: will curators have to start looking for another job? Certainly not, but what is certain is that this decision will animate passionate discussions and become ground for study.

Meanwhile, the ninth edition of the event (curated by a human curator: Dutchman Henk Slager), which was to be held between May 28 and July 4, has been postponed to July 28.
