Ai Weiwei ’s new project has been challenged by residents of New York’s Washington Square, a famous square where the Chinese artist’s new creation will be on view from Oct. 12, 2017 to Feb. 11, 2018.
The installation"Good Fences Make Good Neighbors" would consist of a giant cage placed under the arch that was built in 1892 to celebrate the first 100 years since George Washington ’s inauguration and would reflect on nationalism and immigration, at a time when President Trump would like to build a wall on the border with Mexico.
According to those opposed to the project, the installation would compromise the integrity of the monument and also create problems with the lighting of the Christmas tree.
