Volterra, candidate for Italian Capital of Culture 2021, focuses on Human Re-generation

Presented the theme on which the candidacy project for Italian Capital of Culture 2021 will focus: the Human Re-generation

Volterra, a candidate for Italian Capital of Culture 2021, presented the chosen theme around which its project will revolve: human Re-generation, characteristic of the city’s 20th-century history.

Pursuing the principles of sustainability and accessibility, the main points of the candidacy are:

- Historical Volterra, the history of the city, starting from its Etruscan origins and in relation to contemporary times;

- Inclusive Volterra, from the theater-prison to the former psychiatric hospital, to the dense network of associations that characterize the city;

- International Volterra, the projects for a global and glocal city;

- Digital Volterra, for heritage development in a digital key;

- Innovative Volterra, the city in a scientific and technological key;

- Volterra insane, the ideas for a city that has made the analysis of insanity and diversity a reason for inclusion;

- Volterra that cares, open to the needs of all,

- Volterritory, a city that looks not only at itself, but at the whole territory.

The director of the Strategic Plan for Volterra Italian Capital of Culture 2021, Ledo Prato, said, “The candidacy must not remain an isolated fact, and it must already have the first elements that show what Volterra will be like in 2030, in view of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved by the United Nations. Like the hummingbird, the world’s smallest bird crucial to the health of the entire planet, it is the little ones that make the world big, and we want to try to do it together.”

“Volterra’s is a candidacy not only of a city, but of a territory. We need to fight envy, to generate confidence by applying courage to the challenges ahead. The candidacy is a marathon: the one who leaves first does not win, but the one who has the courage to bring forward strong ideas,” added Paolo Verri, director of the Volterra Italian Capital of Culture 2021 candidacy.

The Promoting Committee, made up of the Municipality of Volterra, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra, Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra, Società della Salute, Casa di Reclusione di Volterra, Diocese of Volterra, Volterra Valdicecina Tourist Consortium, ProVolterra, Volterra-Detroit Foundation, and Unesco Club, invited all entities in the area to submit their ideas to info@volterra2021.it by Sunday, Feb. 2. All proposals will be screened and discussed at an assembly, open to the public and scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6 from 6 to 11 p.m., together with the 21 young people selected from the call launched by the Promoting Committee.
